An Exploration of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and Yoga Philosophy with Steve Rubin

An Exploration of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and Yoga Philosophy with Steve Rubin

  • Part 1: Saturday September 28th 1:30pm – 3pm

  • Part 2: Sunday September 29th 1:30pm – 3pm

  • $25 Each Session or $40 Both Sessions

  • Attendance to Part 1 is not required to attend only Part 2, but encouraged.

In this philosophy workshop, we will explore some of the central sections of Patanjali’s famous Yoga Sutra. The focus will include: general understanding and introduction to the background of the text and its author, the great Patanjali, exploration of some of the central parts of the text in-depth from the first 2 Padas (chapters), gaining view of the Sutras in terms of our yoga practice and every-day life and development, and some simple chanting of the sutras themselves, a traditional element of study, entering into the vibratory sound or mystical, non-intellectual plane of the text.

We will also discuss and familiarize ourselves with some basic terms and concepts of Yoga philosophy not always explicitly mentioned in the text but vital for its correct understanding.

This workshop does not require any previous knowledge of the subject. A simple handout will be given, though please feel free to bring your copy of Yoga Sutras with you if you have one. Any edition is fine, even better if it includes the transliteration of the Sanskrit text.

ABOUT STEVE RUBIN

Steve has had the good fortune to study the Yoga Sutras at significant length with some extremely well learned teachers and practitioners including: his main teacher Paul Dallaghan and his teacher Sri OP Tiwariji of Kaivalyadhama, Dr. Jayashree & Sri Narasimhan from Mysore, India, Vidwan H.V. Nagaraja Rao also from Mysore, and a few other Sanskrit scholars and Yogis.

ABOUT THE FILM

“I AM MARIS: Portrait of a Young Yogi”

Tormented by anxiety, depression and a life-threatening eating disorder, a teenage girl confronts her buried emotions through yoga. With infectious authenticity, I AM MARIS paints an unguarded portrait of mental illness and recovery, using Maris’ own words and vivid artwork to illustrate her inspiring journey. I AM MARIS is a story about mental health, self-love, and the power of one person’s voice.

I am Maris is a beautiful film that gives an honest look into what it’s like to struggle with an eating disorder. Maris is a true inspiration, and will provide hope to so many sufferers and families that full recovery is possible.

Hands on Adjustments Training and Asana Lab

Yoga practitioners can receive tremendous benefit from effective assists with a well trained yoga teacher. This workshop is for both teachers and practitioners who would like to deepen their understanding of asana, focusing on the basic (and some advanced where appropriate) techniques of applying safe and practical hands-on assists as well as verbal and energetic assistance.

When done well, hands-on adjustments are an opportunity to retrain neuro-muscular patterns, or ways the body moves or holds itself that we see in yoga students. You will understand the big picture of why, when, and how to apply safe and effective hands-on adjustments, while learning skills that can be applied to all styles of yoga asana practice.

Postures covered will include many found in led public classes today, many from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system 1st and 2nd series, and several others outside of those, with an emphasis on postures which lend themselves to most benefit in receiving assistance.

Course participants will adjust each other, learning a number of different ways of assisting each posture, with time for repetition, feedback and discussion. We will create a safe context to learn adjustments, receive some direct personal help from Steve, especially in our use of body weight instead of strength as both counterbalance and means of adjusting. Keeping ourselves safe is equally important as the recipient.

Led by Steve Rubin, known for his longterm study, practice, and in-depth understanding of many aspects of yoga, cultivating expert touch in helping others utilizing hands-on adjustments.

*Workshop participants are recommended to have already had asana practice that day, so the body is more receptive and malleable to receiving hands on assists.

$40 - No Refunds
